Ablitech History
The concept for Ablitech was formed in 2005 by Dr. Nick Hammond and Dr. Lisa Kemp as a result of a National Science Foundation backed program to foster entrepreneurship. The NSF program brought together two leaders in global research, The University of Mississippi's Medicinal Chemistry Department and The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.
An initial concept around a new material for coronary stents went on to win awards at several regional and national business plan competitions. In the process, the technology was patent protected and licensed to Life Flow, Inc..
In 2007 Ablitech received NSF SBIR Phase I funding, providing not only the initial funding for the development of its radical platform technology, but also a peer reviewed validation of the merit of the technology. Additional NSF SBIR funding provided the initial support for the development of Ablitech's Versadel gene delivery system.
